With 8 kids winning the spelling bee (which ends after the 20th round; never have more than 2 kids made it through the 20th round) this year, what can the Scripps National Spelling Bee do differently to avoid this from happening? 8 kids winning is amazing, but I can't imagine this is what they want every year. But the kids spelled almost 40 words in a row correctly to finish the Bee, and the whole event took a record almost 4 hours to complete (and they still only knocked off 8 kids out of the 16 who started in round 9). The kids were not going to miss words! How can the event be fixed so that they get back to crowning 1, or maybe just 2 or 3 champs?
All I could think of was to have a speed round tiebreaker. Kids get only 30 seconds to spell the word and are only given the pronunciation and language of origin.
