How do you count steps to a door?

E.g. "Tyler's shortest path to reach the back door required exactly 5 steps." Does the door itself count as a step (blue), or is it enough to reach the square in front of the door (red)?

OK, I kept asking for hints until it told me that Tyler actually goes one further square in, i.e. it doesn't count either end point! There's gotta be a way to make the wording clearer for this type of clue.

I was confused as well! However, I just noticed today that if you click the settings icon below the board, you can have it show the number of steps to various locations on the board itself, including to the back door. It's super helpful!
