Still stuck on how to count paths

If I count paths the same way steps to doors are counted - only the middles count, not either endpoint - then Arya should be where Damien is. The location the game considers correct is seven steps from Zane, which is not an even integer, i.e. it cannot meet the "twice as long" requirement. So it looks like it's counting steps to doors differently than steps to people. Can anyone explain how I'm wrong and the game is right?

The easiest way to resolve your confusion is to open up the settings, select "Step Count", then select "Suspect", then select "Zane" in this case. The puzzle itself will then show you exactly how it calculates those distances.

But yes, in that puzzle, Steven is 4 steps from Zane and Arya is 8 steps from Zane.

People keep pointing out new settings/tools. (Perhaps the tutorial needs to cover more?)

When I select "Step Count", then "Suspect" and then the Name, I don't get any distances. It doesn't seem to do anything.

That only works when you have placed a suspect on the grid. Drag a suspect to a tile, then select "Step Count", then "Suspect", then specify the suspect you just placed on the grid, and you'll see the distance to that suspect from the other tiles.

Martika14 I think it might be a semantics thing.

Like "X steps to reach the back door" means steps to reach the room with the door, but not go through the door.

"Y steps to reach Person" means steps to get into the same square.

So, in this puzzle, it would take 4 steps for Zane to both reach Steven and give him a handshake as well as reach the front door knob and turn it.

...or at least that's how I make it make sense in my head, haha!
