Is this my lucky day or what?

Montyb, that's amazing! Since the points per solve are around 150, 280, or 400, as a statistician, the first 5 digits (77777***) are unremarkable, you just had to wait and plan to look when they occurred (did you actually start looking when you were close?) , but it is truly remarkable that when the last (right-most) 3 digits were changing with each solve, they landed on 777! And your rank is 17! It's almost like a sign!

In truth, Kb83, I was only a couple of puzzles away when I first noticed the string of 7s.

Actually, the occurrence of a string of 8 of the same digit is perhaps not so unusual, it is more amazing that you noticed it, montyb. As I indicated above, the first 5 (of any digit) will happen routinely, once you get up to that point total. Then, once you are "close", you have a chance of roughly 1 / 150 to 1/400 of hitting the last 3 digits exactly. Actually, once you get within 400, you first have a shot of hitting it with a ~400 score. Then, if you are still under the total, you may have another chance at either a 270 score or a 150 score. If we all started monitoring ourselves for this occurrence (I'm not advocating it), it would actually come up rather frequently. I often notice when the car odometer is close to a solid string of the same digit, and then try to stay aware to see that magic occurrence. Of course in that situation, the string always occurs, the only issue is whether you're paying attention.
