Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm new. But, are the degree of difficulty puzzles random or how does it work? Sometimes 20% of the puzzles I do are difficult and sometimes it's 10%. Does one have to achieve some goal to get difficult puzzles?

Totally random. Some days, it seems like all of them are "difficult". But, those days do help your point average.

BTW, difficulty ratings are based on quote length, and have absolutely nothing to do with how hard they actually are.

Have you checked out some of the "help for newcomers"-type threads? There's loads of help in the forum if you take the time to look for it.

yes I have looked. I found one that ...some work and some don't or I'm slow. Only been a member for 9 days. I'll keep looking, until then....btw, I'm doing these dang things in my sleep. Ugh
