  • Hayakawa Quotation

    Hello, Cryptogrammers --

I posted this comment with the quotation itself --
but since it's a pet peeve, I will repeat it here.

I'm going to speak my mind because I have nothing to loose.
"because I have nothing to loose..."

    Try: "nothing to lose"

or perhaps: "nothing to let loose..."

Of all the imbecilities visited upon the English language...
using "loose" when one means "lose" ranks among the worst.

And then this gross misusage is attributed to the late Senator Hayakawa (semanticist and professor of English).

He must be rolling in his grave right about now. How does one spell I-R-O-N-Y?

S.I. Hayakawa rocks! He was a student of the University of Wisconsin who later served on the faculty.

("I'm going to speak my mind because I have nothing to lose." If you didn't know this was from Hayakawa, you'd think Dan Quayle had said it!)
