  • RE: The Comments Box

It was my understanding that the Comments we can leave after we have solved a quote were to be directed at the quote itself.
I do understand some new people asking questions in them, HOWEVER
I do not understand nor appreciate when comments are left that insult the integrity of other players.
And why these comments are not being deleted is beyond me.
And to add injury to insult, admin deletes my responses to these comments and leaves the original vacuous and lame insult in there.

Please dont diss other players in the comments box. People solve fast around here.
Lots of us do. We didnt solve fast when we started. We learned and improved and played and played and loved the game.

If some members have a "problem" with how fast quotes are solved, then bloody well come here and make a post and allow
us all to respond to it. Leaving rude and inane and, as a matter of fact, completely inaccurate statements in the comments section
indicates to me a kind of cowardice.

Im trying not to be too insulting and its taking all I have not to call these members out. Most of the regulars know of whom I speak.
Just deal with it. There are really fast players on site not because they cheat but because they just "get" this game.
And can type fast and have faster computers and faster browsers and excellent pattern recognition and wonderful memories.
    Grow up!!

Im sorely tempted to start copying and pasting those comments here, when I see them.

      Be quite happy to actually.

You are absolutely right Pootie. The box says comments on this quote. It is not meant to be a place for obnoxious remarks bashing other players. That is totally inappropriate. There are some really fast solvers on the site, and they are not cheating. Get over it and quit your whining. If you have a comment about other people, start a forum post or put it in the chat box so that we can respond.

I can't type, my computor is not the fastest, nor am I skilled enough to solve these puzzles as fast as some on this site, I have only been playing for a few months now, and I have seen the same puzzles pop up several times. to suggest that some people are cheating just because they are faster than us with less experience is silly. rather than complaining about those who are faster, I take my hat off to them , and keep on working on my own speed. you folks are awesome. Ignore the naysayers, they probably won't stick around for long anyway.

            Late comments

In the comments column of one puzzle someone made multiple comments at different times on the same day. When someone questioned how this was possible, someone else answered that one could go back and add a comment. Is this possible? I wanted to make a comment but opened a new page to retrieve info and lost my 'crypto' page and couldn't get back to it add my comment.

              returning to comment

              Hi!
You can press the 'back' arrow on the top left corner of your screen.
It takes you back to the page you were on previously.
The more you press it, the further back you go.

And BTW, I love so many of the comments that people leave.
I always read them and really enjoy the witty remarks.
              They make me smile.
And I have to laugh when I see a comment that I left and I have no recollection of having said it, but it was just what I was about to type in.

                and speaking of comments...

can we talk about the use of the comment section for keeping track of one's times?
it's obvious that this isn't what the comment section is for, isn't it?

yes, i understand that we occasionally post our times there, but generally it's because we've amazed ourselves: either by an unexpected fast time or an abysmally slow one!

i see this person's scores being posted on so many quotes now, and i'm so tempted to leave a comment about it, then figure it's not my place to do so. but last night there was one with two times, a month apart, posted by this person (good for you, for improving your time), so it's obviously fulfilling its purpose for him/her--in the comments box beneath it, i typed "MAKE IT STOP!" but didn't post it. playing it safe. (you may prefer "wuss".)

                  You are so right!

                  I totally agree with you.
I'm not sure why it bothers me so much, but it really does!
Like you, I've been tempted to write something, but always decided to leave it alone.
Thanks for bringing it up here!

I also agree that posting one's time is an inappropriate use of the comment box, but I doubt that this particular person will care what we think. What a horrible mess it would be if we all started doing it! I'm not sure if there's anything that Stephen (Admin) can do about it.

He does have the power to moderate all comments in every part of the site. Perhaps, only forbidden words trigger his moderation mode.

Let's be honest, if all annoying comments were banned, how many would end up posted?

And I can't stand kjmcaj leaving times either. Yes, I went there. Name and everything.

Very well said, my friend. Like you, I am a poor typist and even if I were fast I could never solve as fast as some of the members do. This causes me to admire them greatly, not envy or doubt them. I do, however occasionally repond to what I see as a smart-alec comment, or one with an extremely politically biased tone with one of my own. I shouldn't do this. This site is for fun and I learn things in the bargain. In future I will try to hold my tongue/fingers.

Give yourself a break, Lurker. Very understandable. Honestly, sometimes I find myself hoping a comment of mine gets banned. Hindsight.

re: New feature - input indeed!

                            Hi -

I gotta agree about it being annoying with the posting of personal times in the comments section. I posted a reply in one of the forums (New feature - input indeed!) a couple of months ago (see below).

I did notice soon after, that that commenter's comments were often left blank. I think (maybe confirm this admin?) that admin began to go back and erase said commenter's "times".... Has anyone else seen this pattern? I believe it may be the only solution for admin short of creating a whole new feature....

here's the reply to forum I made:

completion times in the comments section

I've noticed lately that there is a newer player who seems to be posting their completion time in the comments section - there's just the player's name and 52 secs., or whatever.

I don't think the comments area is a good place for this person's record keeping, as, if everybody started doing the same, the comments would become cluttered with completion times.

However, I do see and understand what this player is doing - which is to keep track of their personal achievements. I kind of like the idea, just not in the comments section, but then there's really no other way to do it.

Perhaps there is some way to add a feature which would track a player's personal information, just for that player to see?

Hmmm, I don't know enough about web sites to know if this would be possible...

                              P.S.

As momof7 said: I also "...have to laugh when I see a comment that I left and I have no recollection of having said it, but it was just what I was about to type in."

Also, sometimes I see a comment I made and cringe a little - evidence of too much wine while cryptoing?

Haha - still better than drinking and ____ (fill in the blank) facebooking, driving, etc. ....
