I was just wondering what it takes to win a trophy, I joined in February and last month I solved 100% of 401 puzzles, but did not get one. But others with less than 100% did get on the top 20. Is there something else that is considered?

In the success-rate challenge, players compete to achieve the highest success-rate percentage for puzzles solved vs. puzzles played. Only players who are ranked in the top 50 of that month's high-score challenge are eligible for this contest. (Ties are broken by total accumulated points.)

What position were you in, in total points, if you didnt make it into the top fifty you wont get a trophy.

But I wasn't tie... I solved 100% and some winners solved 99.7%. Is there a minimum number of puzzles that need to be solved?

It's a points thing. Go under "high scores", then click on the words "monthly competitions". If you aren't at least #50 on the high-scoring list, you don't qualify for either % or speed competitions. It's to keep players who only do a handful of puzzles per month from coming away with a trophy. With 401 puzzles, you were probably in the mid-70s.

Thanks! There should be rules listed somewhere. I also can't figure out how points are calculated for each puzzle. It can't be speed because I can solve quickly and only get 130 points and then take forever and get 300 or 400. Can I find the rules somewhere?

All puzzles are rated easy, average and difficult. You can find the rating in the grey box to the right of the
            puzzle with the letter frequencies.

If its an easy puzzle, usually the long ones, you will get a max of just a couple of hundred or less points. Average are a couple hundred to three hundred or so. And difficult, usually the shortest ones are high three hundreds to four hundreds.
Depending on how fast you solve.
If you solve a puzzle quickly very quickly...you will get the max number of points. As time ticks by the points decrease.
You will get a minimum of 10 points if you are taking a rather long time. Points are never deducted or set to zero.

The rules for scoring are posted above each competition, what is needed to get a trophy or ribbon is mentioned there.

Longer puzzles by virtue of having more similar letters are easy; avg puzzles are less words; and difficult are the shortest puzzles in number of words.

            Hope thats not confusing.
Welcome to the site and good luck.

ps...if you want to check your stats just click on my scores at the top of the page it will show you how
you are doing for the month and lifetime. Thats also a good way to check if you have missed a puzzle.

              rules? just have fun, eh

It's a speed thing, difficult rated quotes start at 450 points
average rated quotes start at 300 points
easy rated quotes start at 150 points
ratings are based on length of quote, the faster you solve the quote, the more points you get, I also looked for the rules and did not find them, so this is a good a place as any to start.
              Rule # 1. Have fun
Rule # 2. Never accuse a member of cheating on the comments section of a puzzle you just completed, if you must, do it here in the forum where the accused can defend themselves
Rule # 3. If you get stuck on a puzzle, help is available in the forum, or just ask in the chat box, some members will stop what they are doing and go out of their way to help you out
              Rule # 4. Have fun
Rule # 5. The more you play, the faster you will become, patience

maryjogrove, some of the best people in the world play here, get to know them, welcome to the BEST site and have fun- wm aka

Widowmaker, those are really great rules!

You and Pootie did an excellent job of explaining how the scoring works. Stephen would do well to consider putting that info into FAQ, I think.

                  I never realized...

I never realized that each puzzle had an actual rating...
I've been on this site for ages and I never even knew that!

FYI, I wrote to Admin earlier today about scoring/rating and he assured me that the info will be added to FAQ in the next update.
