  • Connection

So far this month I have only failed to solve once. In the past five months I have failed only three times. But my scores show 61 failures to solve with six this month alone. Why? Because I live in an isolated area with only 2 forms of internet access open to me. The type I have is a DSL phone connection which is very slow and unreliable. The other would be satellite feed which is worse. I would never have thought that a change in weather (even when my phone service is still working) would kick me offline. It does. Often. Sometimes when this happens, the service returns quickly and I can go to 'recent games' and hit 'retry' to finish a puzzle. But other tmes the connection stays down long enough to close this option. Worse still, often when I do get back online, I find that I have been credited with 2 or more failures instead of the 1. Makes no sense but there it is. Besides moving, what can I do? Thank you for any help. Please!!!! P.S. I'm not sure about the weather related thing. May just be coincedental. Jnoodles

Unfortunately, I think you'll just have to get over the need to prove to everyone else with your stats that you can solve every puzzle. You know what you've finished, and that's the important part. This site is really about you improving your own mind, not the competition.

Your "solving percentage" is 96.3%, so it's obvious that you're a good solver. But I guess you're stuck with a bad connection until/unless you move.

My motto is: if you can't change something you don't like, your only alternative is to learn to live with it.

Welcome to the site, and happy solving!

Not trying to prove anything. Asking for suggestions, help. Not helpful.

This has happened to most everyone who has tried to
keep their 100 percent. We are not sure why puzzles
load while we are not logged in.
What we have learned to do is, check recent games
as often as possible, even while solving, after logging out
come back and check and hope to hell a game hasnt loaded
while we are snoring away or doing our 3D life stuff.
So no there are no solutions. Lurkers response was succinct.
Yes its outrageously frustrating to lose your 100 percent.
              However, forge on.

Unfortunately no, I can't. I was hoping someone knew of a way I could log on from another computer or phone and get to the same puzzle quickly enough. When my connection dies I am still logged in from this computer so the "retry" option won't help from there unless someone knows a trick. Also, on the "recent games" page it says, "This can be useful if you accidentally loaded a duplicate puzzle". I wondered if anyone knew how to avoid loading duplicates or how to know I'd done it in the first place without hitting "recent games" after each and every puzzle. Maybe I 'will' just move. I love doing these puzzles! I'm epileptic, old, can't type and the medication along with the epilepsy itself (adult onset) takes its toll on my cognitive functions. Working cryptograms, crosswords, sudoku, playing chess, coffee and reading seem to stave-off the inevitable vegitative state. I am glad of this and should be complacent as Lurker suggests, but I'm not going to "improve my mind", just keep it functioning a bit longer. I'd like to get something in my trophy room someday while I'm at it.
                Maybe.

                      yikes!

i'd be frustrated, too. is this a recent move that has led to the problem? (and are you planning a move asap?!)

                        Mouse

At one point, I was loading multiple puzzles all the time and it was killing my solving percentage. It turned out that it was my mouse. (Thanks to my baby dropping it a few times too many). A new mouse solved that problem!

I'm not a 100% solver, I don't have what it takes. BUT I think my percentage would be a bit higher except for this problem or that one: confused: . There always seems to be something. I feel like I'm always complaining about this add or that one that slows me down. I've decided to grin and bear it.

It's not nearly as frustrating for me, because I'm never close to 100%. I didn't realize that DSL was slow. I hope it gets better for you.

The speed of DSL depends largely on how close to a "hub" you are. I have DSL, but I'm quite close to one. If you live someplace where the lines go through woods or high terrain, you're much more apt to have disturbances in delivery due to high winds, tree limbs, and critters. My DSL has always been reliable and fairly fast. I wish it could be that way for everyone.

I thought I'd add my observations as someone who has only been around here for about six months, and has investigated this anomaly a little on my own.

For one thing, I've never experienced a "ghost crypto" occurrence while I was not active on the site. Perhaps this is unique to me, but I wouldn't worry too much about ghosts showing up while you're not here.

Secondly, while the frequency of they show up may somehow be related to internet connectivity, I have seen ghosts occur even at times when I would describe my connection as perfect.

Lastly, as of yet, I have not found any relationship between the circumstances that trigger a ghost. Obviously, it's difficult to nail down exact circumstances since one is not immediately aware of a ghost's existence. One idea I have, is that it is caused by something on cryptograms.org's end, that we all experience if we happen to be playing at the time, but we'd need the admin to comb through the data to prove it, and it still wouldn't solve the problem.

The bottom line is that if you check your Recent Games link every two hours while you're playing and before you log off, you should be able to bust all of your ghosts and keep your 100% record.
