The bell curve is a bad fit for time data. As used, it's a meaningless decoration. Use a box-and-whiskers instead. In about 30 seconds, I found one script that will spit them out: http://mbostock.github.io/protovis/e...d-whisker.html. I can't say whether it's good, but there are bound to be others if this one doesn't suit.
