I don't play Mahjong. I'm just giving it a try. Generally ending in last place. Any tips for improved performance?

I’m not an expert, but here are some things I’ve found helpful.
-Familiarity with the tiles helps with speed, and speed bonuses can be worth many points. I started giving names to the tiles so I could look for a “happy harp”, or a “saddle”, and playing more often helps with recognition
-Find pairs of yellow dots as early as possible
-Look for any blockages, such as two like tiles next to each other at the end of a row. Try to find that tile’s match vs taking the remaining two like tiles with each other.
-I like to take all four like tiles if they are all available - means I don’t have to wonder if any are still out there

It’s call “Time Bonus”, and it shows up under Match Points and above Explosions. No idea how it’s calculated but the more your solve time is below the average solve time, the higher the Time Bonus.Comment

So then my time score depends on the time score of others?
Awful. I need other players to get a phone call mid game, like all the time.
Subjective scoring isn't a good scoring system.
