The game is being slowed by pages that are taking too long to load and some boards become unplayable.

If you're running Windows, load and run Task Manager. If something is hogging all your CPU or disk capacity, you'll find out what it is. I'll bet it's something you don't want or need. When I had that problem, it was a Windows program charged with updating a database for Microsoft and therefore storing information about every program I'd run recently and what resources it had used, etc. The slowdown was caused by that one program using 100% of disk bandwidth and basically shutting the computer down. It would be unusable for as long as two hours at a time. The cure was to remove that program from the registry. There are other Windows programs capable of doing the same thing.

I cannot get a 5x5 game to load AT ALL today. It just spins and spins and spins, until it times out completely. It has nothing whatsoever to do with my computer or any Windows program hogging CPU, because I've done nothing differently today than any other day. Every other day, it works; today, it will not load AT ALL.

What you are describing sounds like an internet problem or a server problem on the WordTwist side -- specifically with the game server, because otherwise you couldn't have posted your comment.

Using an IMac and fire fox. I get the following message: A web page is slowing down your browser. What do you want to do? Wait. Stop it. If I stop it I get the next Wordtwist page. If it happens on the click here to start page it won't advance past that page. I have to click on the play button to get a new board. If it happen when the board comes up and I click the stop it option. I get the this game has already been played window. Before today this would happen two or three times a week and not be a big deal. This afternoon it has been happening VERY often

Okay, so it sure looks like an internet problem. My wife sometimes has that problem on some of the sites she visits. When they get a whole lot of traffic through one server, that server becomes overloaded and everyone using that server sees exactly what you describe. She sees it because some of the sites are very specialized and their web pages all go through one server, which is almost always not a problem. But sometimes someone will post a story that gets a lot of attention, and then it's just as you described. She's also seen it on Facebook, when someone is trying to take the site down. I'll bet WordTwist doesn't have a dedicated server, but just shares space on some big, fancy servers with other sites. If one of them is using almost all available bandwidth, you'll see your kind of problem. I seem to remember Stephen once saying that WordTwist uses a number of different servers. The one I'm using is fine.

Try switching to Chrome. I use an iMac & I haven't had your problems. Now recently I added 'Adblock' to my computer to help me endure all the ads attacking me from the other site I also interact & its really helped the speed of loading pages. I'm not sure if this would help you, but its worth a try.
