  • Question about ads

Recently, when I've logged in to play WordTwist, I've gotten a message saying:
    .
    Help Support Puzzle Baron
Ads keep our content free for you to enjoy.
Please consider allowing ads. Thank you!

Can someone tell me how this works? Does Puzzle Baron get paid every time an ad appears on my screen, or only if I click on an ad? If the former, then I'm happy to allow ads, as long as they don't interfere with the game. But I almost never click on ads.

A few years ago, some of the ads did interfere: Sometimes in the middle of a game, an ad would take over the whole screen, and I couldn't get back to the game. I don't know if that still happens.

The ads are interfering a little with the game right now. The ads change after a while, and when that happens the board moves. Not nearly as bad as taking over the screen, but it's harder to play when the board suddenly moves on the screen mid-game.

      Hi Nylimb -

We receive a tiny fraction of a cent for every page view, whether or not you click on the ad. I do my best to keep out ads that affect gameplay - if you're noticing an ad that affects the game board in any way please email me a screenshot (or post one here) so we can track it down and kill it.

      Thanks!

      Stephen

I have three computers I can run WordTwist on. I have disabled all ad blocking on two of them and logged in to WordTwist on them, so the ads can play non-stop. The one I'm actually playing WordTwist on has all ads blocked, so I look like two people playing with no ad blocker.

And just a note by the way: on the computers where no ads are blocked, I have lots of ads that cover the part of the game selection area -- the part you'd click on to get a new board is blocked by NCL (Norwegian Cruise Lines), Merrell (shoe ads), SHOP COFFEE, etc. So, "Load new random game" is covered by those ads. Other ads in the same general area cover text but not the "Load" text. So ads for Progressive, Microsoft, YouTubeTV, etc. are fine.

It seems to me that ANY ad that covers any part of the box containing the "Prepare to Play" legend is a "bad" ad. Every one of them could cover the "Load new random game" text and interfere with game play. That includes the ads for Progressive, Microsoft, etc. that I named before as "good". They're not. They could cover almost anything, depending on how you scrolled or how big your text is. The ONLY good ads are the ones in either of two places: the one to the right of the "Hate Ads?" text, and the one below the Competition Timer text and entirely within that box. I haven't seen any ads to the right of the Competition Timer box or to the left of the "Prepare to Play" box, but if any did they'd also be well-behaved. I never realized just how intrusive the ads could be if you let all of them have free rein.

A problem I have is with the rapidly changing ads by some companies. If I am having a bad pain day they make it worse. At any time they can be distracting. I have been finding when looking up words that ads can cover significant portions of the information.
