What are Shapes?

The hints refer to shapes A, B, C, etc. But what shape goes with what letter? Across and then down? Down and then across? Or something else entirely. I did look for an answer to this but couldn't find it.

When it says shapes, each will have a font colour that matches the colour on the puzzle. The shapes the hint mentions will also all have diagonal lines across each square.
