If you want inexpensive but decent housing, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan has something to offer. Take a look in Marquette County to start with, and tell Realtor.com that you want to see houses under $20,000. The climate can be brutal in the winter, but if you want a summer place in town with running hot and cold water it could be a good deal. The thing is, there are a LOT of places like that in the USA. A lot of small towns basically went belly-up, and houses in small towns in places like Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, etc. can be had for practically nothing because they're deserted and the town wants someone to live in them. The downstroke is usually that there are no jobs anywhere nearby, the nearest hospital is a healthy drive, and the same for any stores. That's what happens to small towns in the USA when all the jobs are outsourced to China, Indonesia, India, Borneo, etc.

I am certain that the same kind of thing is happening almost everywhere in the developed world. Desperately poor people will do almost any job at any wage to survive, and that fact is not lost on the corporate world. I offer no insults and no solutions. This is not a political forum.

I completely agree, this isn't a political forum and I hope we all can just discuss topics without that kind of animosity.

Yes, I've heard of this concept before. I knew a man who once lived in California that always wanted to buy a home but could never afford it til he was offered a job in Kansas and he took it. The cost of houses there were so low in comparison. He said he bought his house in Kansas for same price he paid for his truck in California.

That's how it goes with supply and demand. If there's a large supply and little demand, the cost is very inexpensive. If there's a large demand and low supply, the cost is very expensive. The reasons why something is inexpensive varies and there's always drawbacks.

As far as outsourcing small town jobs to other countries I simply don't agree with that concept. Why can't Americans pay more for better quality merchandise? Why do we have to be the throw away society? When possible I always try to buy high quality well made products. So I'd rather go without so I can own better quality things that last longer. I KNOW my perspective is unpopular and I really can't understand why.

Here's the deal, and it has little to do with quality. Because, think about it, the poor guy in Borneo really wants to eat. REALLY. So he'll do the very best job he can and maybe he can make something of higher quality than you could buy made here in the USA. The deal is, do you want your neighbor to lose his job? Because if you buy imported stuff all the time, your neighbor won't have a job. You will either support him, or he won't have any income at all. What do you expect him to do about that? Cry on the streetcorner and decently die? Riot? Start a revolution? It's not going to be good.

I'm retired. I have a nice income. I chose to live in a small town in rural Wisconsin. I seriously considered moving to another country entirely, but rejected the Americas because of their (deserved) resentment of Yankees. Canada is just too cold. Everywhere else is too far or too expensive or both. I am equidistant from my daughters and my godchild, and all trips are less than an hour by car. I see what is going on in America and I hate it -- the country is disintegrating, thanks to appeals to stupidity, denials of science, contempt of education and intelligence, hatred of minorities, intolerance, bigotry, and racism. Short term gain is glorified. The Founding Fathers pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to start this country. And now we see people making deals -- ah, my financials are better with this guy. Too bad he'd kill us all and destroy the country, but I have to consider my dollars. And HONOR? Find it. I dare you. It's in precious short supply, everywhere. And everywhere, there are fake "patriots" who are utterly clueless what anything means, anything at all, and hate anyone who does. "Socialism"? Clueless. "Marxist" Clueless. "Communist"? Beyond help. "Fascist"? Lord help them, they think it's "liberal"! If I come off as a cantankerous old guy, so be it. I have daughters and grandsons, and they will probably fight in some wars because of all of this. And I will likely go to my grave hating all the people who sneered at "eggheads" and had contempt for education, because they are the reason the world is not the paradise it ought to be.

I loved your treatise on the current state of affairs.

I thought I'd let you know that much of Canada is indeed stuck in the deep freeze most of the winter. However, on Vancouver Island, where I live, the lowest temperature last winter was 14F for one day. The next low was 23F for 1 day. Every other day was warmer. This summer the record high was 104F (thanks to the heat dome that fried western North America). There are 2 vineyards less than a mile away from here and our neighbor down the road has palm trees in his front yard.

When a certain politician in the US was elected and then a few years later claimed election fraud, the Canada Immigration website crashed after each event w Americans wanting info. Possibly contrary to popular belief, it would take months to do so and there are umpteen hoops to jump through as determined by a faceless, inflexible, unaccountable bureaucracy. I say "possibly contrary to popular belief" because, given the long history of friendly relations between the 2 countries, that's exactly what I thought as well. When I tried to bring my American wife here, it took 18 months and we lost everything we owned stored in California because we couldn't afford to move it after 18 months of unemployment for my wife.

I've always had trouble with various puzzles. I don't know what it has to do with it, but I can sit for hours guessing one word in a crossword puzzle or wondering where to put a piece of a mystery.

So do you spend your entire wordtwist time looking for one word? Lalatan does that but he finds it pretty easily as he's looking for the super long ones. Is that what you do too?
