No wonder I seldom get above the average score in Wordtwist. When I see that someone's best word is " HYPERCYCLOIDALLY" as I just did, I haven't got a chance! lol
Once, a few years back, I managed to get a 12-letter word, ("indiscretely"), but I seldom get more than eight. Is there a secret to getting longer words, or is it just something you're born with?

I don't play for long words. My longest (recorded) 4x4 word is 10 letters. When I start finding long words it means I am having a bad game, score wise, and I dump the game. I have dumped 11, 12 and 13 letter words. If I ever manage to find a 16 letter word I certainly won't dump the game. What you can do to find long words is to make, what some folks call, "Frankenwords" find suffixes and prefixes and attach them to root words. especially -nesses suffix. Works well with bio and chem roots.

Not all 16 letter words are "frankenwords" though. I just checked, and the 16-letter word that made my score board this month is "supertransaction", which is pretty straightforward. I use the mobile version of the game with the swiping method to find words, I think that helps with finding long words. The letters that I've already used change colour, so I see what's left on the board. I assume that when I found "action", I saw the syllable "trans" next to it, then I played "transaction" and saw the word "super" next to that, and tried it all together.
Sometimes, when several variants of the same word are available, I can get a higher than usual score by finding long words, like when there's a word in British and American spelling in singular and plural form (-ization, -izations, -isation and -isations). Doesn't take much time to play all of those words once you've found one of them, and depending on the first bit can be worth more than 20 points each, racking up more than 80 points with just 4 words.
