Sewing machines self destruct in my hands. There is something about me, that a sewing machine, doesn't love.

Or perhaps something about a sewing machine that YOU don't love, Abra! It helps to have had a grandmother who taught you all the basics, though.

My grandmother was a wonderful seamstress, and extremely good at all needle crafts. She never taught me anything. I wish I'd live nearer to her.

I sympathize, abra. I used to sew and enjoyed it very much, but then my machine died. I bought another and it died almost immediately. I think they just don't make them the way they used to. Or maybe you just have to get a really expensive one?

I have my grandmother's old treadle machine, which I put an old Japanese all metal electric machine into. I was a seamstress, doing home dec, so I could stay home with my kids. I sewed my finger with Granny's machine, and the veneer is gone from the top because she hung her canary's cage above the machine, and he did love to take baths. Funny, I have a bird in my sewing room now... wonderful memories.

I still have my grandmother's sewing machine, converted into one with a "knee peddle" and in a wonderful cabinet. That VERY old Singer will sew through ANYTHING, and I can't bear to part with it. I watched my Nana put the needle thru her finger and I've done it a few times myself....funny how it really doesn't hurt that much.

I just automatically trust anyone, friend or acquaintance, until I'm proven otherwise. If I'm telling a casual acquaintance something that shouldn't be shared, I will mention that. I don't see the need to test anyone. If I find out someone tested me, I will probably never trust that person because they themselves lack trust.

This quote beautifully expresses a key moment from my life, when I was still separated but not yet divorced, and I hated him so much and for such good reasons that everyone including his own family agreed with me....and then one day, while I was ranting to a friend about his latest outrageous behavior, I just stopped short, in mid-rant, suddenly realizing that I could not listen to myself spewing hatred for one more second. I guess that was the moment when my anger stopped being productive. Sometimes the hatred doesn't ever peter out or lose power; you just have to put in down and choose a brighter road.

Instead of hate for my ex who did a lot to warrant my hatred, I chose indifference. Giving-up the energy used in hate I turned that energy into self-improvement and caring for my son; who needed both physical and mental medical attention. Eventually I started my own business and never looked back. It's been a good 40 years without that baggage of hate to carry around. The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference. Hate still carries caring to some degree.

When I feel "Hate", I have decided that I am just angry. It is much easier to control anger than to control Hate. It is still possible to Love someone with whom I am angry. But if there is a person (or thing) that I really hate, I find that avoidance is the best thing.

There are some great comments here about getting past hatred. In my own experience, faith in God is key. True hatred is such a corrosive emotion that is difficult to handle. We can neither ignore it, nor allow it to live in our heads indefinitely.

When I was going through my divorce, my lawyer advised me to have something I could look at before entering court to remind myself of why I was divorcing him. Most of the time I felt *relief* after getting away from him rather than outright "hate." Besides, I got custody of the friends.... :-)

My husband takes out the garbage, does the laundry, cooks wonderful meals, paints the house, grow vegetables and flowers and mows the lawn. I do the vacuuming, scrub the bathrooms, handle the finances/bills/taxes, wash the dishes and take care of the cat litter. This division of labor has worked well for us for over 30 years.

                      Blush, I'm a Fanilow.

This is Abra's son. At the time she passed, for the most part, I thought "I'll save this for later". That turned out to be this week, so thank you all.

I live closer to Raleigh than Mom did, and I know a lot of people who went to NC State. People around here love ZG, he went to NCSU, and is from somewhere in NC. I .... Do not understand the attraction to Mr GalifImnotgoingtospellhisnamerihtsinceicantcopyfro mtheir.

But we sent Mom to see Barry. Twice I think my dad was just as excited as she was.

Also, I think Mom's quote about how Andy Warhol must have understood about the soup is her best line.

Right abra, probably if a woman didn't want to get married and have kids, she was a monster.

it's far better for a woman who doesn't want children not to have them. There's nothing monstrous about it.

Friedrich, I mustache you a question... why are your quotations always so dark. How could you be so serious when all you had to do was look in the mirror and burst out laughing?

ronasid, I agree with you, except for this: "We should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once. And we should call every truth false which was not accompanied by at least one laugh." and... "He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance; one cannot fly into flying." He had a lot to say about dancing. It seems so un-Nietzsche-like. The Dancing Nietzsche, might have been quite likable.
