Sub 10 is really awesome. My patience usually runs out when I don't place dots.

On a less related note: do you guys use colours for the grid? I find that when I turn them off my board overview drops dramatically. Is using no colours something I should train?

Congrats, 5 seconds is really at the limit I think, and the strategies mentioned above in the thread are correct: no placing dots, and resetting quite often until you get particularly easy puzzles. You get used to no dots, and it is also playing on instinct, placing stars even when you arent 100% sure, which is correct like 75% of the time.
