    Okay, full confession, I actually wrote this one at a family reunion when I was about 10 or 12. My wonderful Aunt hosting the reunion had prepared opening lines of limericks on little bits of paper, which we all had to draw out of jars, and then complete, and I think this is when I first developed a kind of mania for limericks. This Aunt loved writing funny poetry, sometimes imitating the style of Ogden Nash, who was one of her favorites. Once I've written a limerick, I usually (but not always) remember it, because the process of getting it done tends to lodge it in the brain.

    A garden can be very unfair. You can do everything right, and still get aphids, ants and caterpillars. And your plants can just not grow for no apparent reason. (I don't have a green thumb, in case anyone was wondering.)
