Susan Sontag is a cynic. By definition, art or any representation stands at one or more removes from life and direct experience. Yet (also by definition) art serves to enhance life by calling forth from within a profound human response.

Susan had every right to be cynical. I dont think however in this context she was. I believe she was making a commentary on modern art. Which if closely viewed is at times extremely dehumanizing.

All one must do to earn the right be cynical is to pay attention. I think this is especially true when considering the connection between art in its broadest sense and commerce. As a general rule, our society regards and rewards the entertainer rather than those who seek and meaning via artistic endeavors.
