Don't forget Altair, Deneb, Algol, Arturus, Barnard's star, Spica, Wolf 359. Yes there really is a Wolf 359, but we're a few centuries from meeting the Borg there.

oddcouple, I feel the same way. On npr they had a thread asking what music performance at any time in history you'd give anything to hear live. For me, it would be the first performance ever of the Messiah. Can you imagine how astonishing it must have been?

I took my kids to see Messiah when they were about 4 and 10, in a church with hard wooden seats. It was the Portland Baroque Orchestra, with period instruments. I was amazed, considering the length (3 hours!) and the repetition (see Bansai's comment), but they were very good and enjoyed it. I would never do that to them again. A recording is fine. But the PBO is really amazing, thank you Monica Huggett.

Thanks, Bansai. As I read your words, the music sang in my head. I eagerly buy tickets for Handel's Messiah every year, and weep when hearing it. I must be getting old. And like Marnita, I sang alto. Wonderful memories. Thank God for them.

I think I've disturbed at least four psychologists, and two of them had Ivy League doctorates hanging on their walls. And I only went to these sessions at the behest of my family. Eventually, I refused to go, when I realized that they had spent as much as it would have cost to pay room, board and tuition at a state school to earn a Bachelor's Degree in engineering.

For his 15th birthday, young Frank Zappa asked his parents for the money to make a long distance phone call to this French-born avant-garde composer, who then resided in New York. Varese was not at home, but Zappa did speak to his wife. Unfortunately, the composer died in 1965, just a year before Zappa cut his first album. Zappa was never able to meet this idol during his lifetime.
