Having read a little of the work of Norman Mailer, I'm wondering if this is in condemnation of Diane Arbus, or if he is paying her the highest compliment. ???

While Greek philosophers were known to take male lovers, this did not necessarily mean they were gay. Note this entry from Wikipedia: "While in Athens, his wife Pythias died and Aristotle became involved with Herpyllis of Stageira, who bore him a son whom he named after his father, Nicomachus."
