A friend told me once that her boyfriend, having left the house and walked to work before her, left a trail of pennies knowing that she wouldn't be able to make it down the sidewalk without stooping to pick up every one of them. I think of that story every time I don't bother to pick up a penny on the ground.

That is such a bizarre story. Why would her boyfriend want to make her late for work like that? I hope there is more backstory to that, because on the face of it, it sounds rather mean-spirited.

If winners are the people who find success in their lives, however they define success, then a winner may quit many times as the person recognizes that the current path isn't going in the right direction after also. I suppose it also matters how you define quitting. It may not be quitting if you quit using this plan because it isn't working and move on to that plan in hopes it will work better? And if your plan is to prove that the world is flat it won't matter how long you persist or how many methods you seek, failure is inevitable.

Really hard to know what this is supposed to mean - second helping of a meal seems to fit but doesn't seem to relate to inertia (well, i guess you stay at the table, but you're eating so you're not inert). How about if he meant seconds as a unit of time? So when i'm enjoying perfectly good seconds doing something like, i dunno, say Cryptograms for example, it leads to inertia with respect to my work. Oh crap! I have a report due - gotta go!

You just start eating and keep on eating and eating and eating, not getting up from the table. That's culinary inertia as distinct from the physics definition of inertia.

Who cares if you solve the puzzles quickly or not? Isn't the secret prize being illuminated by a great quote? If a cryptogram is a box of Cracker Jacks, the caramel coated popcorn, peanuts and a prize here are the quote itself, and your written response to it. What if the quote you got today was so great, you changed your mind, that changed your life, and you changed the world for the better, forever? Wouldn't that be better than beating bansaisequoia by two shakes of a rabbit's tail?
